In an era when the phenomenon of job switching became the order of the day, Nayyar's association with HCL Technologies has been a long innings spanning over 18 years. And he still remains the driving force behind the company. In fact, in a career spanning over more than 40 years, Nayyar has had diverse experience in government, international agencies and the corporate sector.
A graduate in Electric Engineering with a management degree from XLRI Jamshedpur, Nayyar also holds a Master's in Development Economics from William's College, Massachusetts. Nayyar started his career with the Indian Administrative Service. During his stint with the government he held a number of key positions including District Magistrate, secretarial posts with state governments and Director, Department of Economic Affairs, government of India. Nayyar also worked with the World Bank for over 10 years in a series of senior assignments, including successively being the Chief for the Energy, Infrastructure and the Finance Divisions for East Asia and Pacific.
In the Corporate sector, Nayyar was the founding Chairman & Managing Director of the state owned Gas Authority of India. He served as the Managing Director of HCL Corporation and the Vice Chairman of HCL Technologies. He is also the founder & CEO of HCL Perot Systems. In addition to his current responsibilities as Vice-Chairman of Tech Mahindra, Nayyar serves as a Director on the Boards of Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Heavy Electricals, Great Eastern Shipping, Business Standard and Kotak Life Insurance.
A man known for his diverse talents, Nayyar is credited with planning and executing the success saga of HCL Comnet. Established 10 years back, it is one of the better known companies in the sector, continuing to pioneer new trends in the realm of IT service management.
One of the pillars of the HCL Group, Nayyar started his career with the Group in 1985. Starting as a Senior Management Trainee, Nayyar has handled diverse national portfolios in sales and marketing with HCL Limited, for instance, HCL Finance, HCL Investments and the HCL-HP venture. In his initial seven years with the company, Nayyar was promoted five times, and in 1992, he was appointed as the General Manager for Strategic Group Diversification. This later resulted in the creation of HCL Comnet, and in 1994, he was nominated as CEO of the company.
