The fierce competition in getting a piece of IT business could very well be gauged from what Bill Gates, the richest IT tycoon in the world once said: "Every day we're saying-how can we keep this customer happy? How can we go ahead in innovation by doing this, because if we don't, somebody else will. “If what Gates says is a touchstone of success and survival, than S Ramadorai, CEO and MD, Tata Consultancy Services has gone a step ahead in making these innovative ideas yield a rich harvest for his company. It was Ramadorai's focused attention and unwavering resolution that today, one is awestruck to see, TCS leaping forward as one of the fastest IT companies in India, which has, within a short span of time, assumed a global stature.

A Bachelor in Physics from Delhi University and an Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunications graduate from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Ramadorai also earned his Masters in Computer Science from the University of California, USA. A man who always keeps himself updated with the latest development, Ramadorai underwent the Senior Executive Development Program at MIT's Sloan School of Management. But what sets Ramadorai apart from other corporate bigwigs is not his academic excellence but his down-to-earth, practical approach to emerging challenges. Realising the significance of globe shrinking at a lightening speed, he was quick to grab some of the biggest IT contracts by building relationships with corporations and academic institutions.

He, at the TCS, has been instrumental in planning and directing technology development and acquisitions, and overseeing the company's research and development activities. A man known for his boundless energy and enthusiasm, Ramadorai played a pioneering role in establishing Offshore Development Centers (ODCs) in India to provide high-end solutions to major corporations, including IBM, Microsoft, General Electric, Hewlett Packard, Tandem-Compaq, Capital Bank, Target Corporation, Citibank, Qwest, Lucent Technologies, Ericsson and Nortel. Beginning his career with TCS as a programmer, Ramadorai rose through the ranks and files very quickly and was soon given the charge of setting up TCS' operations in the US in 1975.

He began with New York and the network since then, grown to over 50 offices throughout the country. Ramadorai, who has served TCS for the last 33 years, has not only become its Chief Executive Officer but also played a crucial role as Chairman of Tata Technologies Ltd. and Chairman of CMC Ltd. He has been a Director of CMC Ltd. since October 16, 2001. For a man of his stature, it was natural culmination of his efforts when he was awarded Asia Business Leadership Award recently. A man who helped TCS storm the financial service industry and become a global IT powerhouse, there is probably no award or recognition greater than the satisfaction of having performed his work well.
