From1984 to the present, RRB continues as a well consolidated Indian company engaged in the field of new and renewable sources of energy in India. In the field of Wind Energy, RRB has developed proficiency in respect of site identification, compilation of wind data, analyzing characteristics of the terrain like roughness factor, micrositing etc. Trendsetters and leaders of "Wind Power" in India, under Bakshi, RRB has developed a high level of skill and expertise in the field of Power Generation through Wind Energy. He currently holds the position of Chairman RRB Consultants and Engineers Private Limited, Managing Director Solchrome Systems India Limited, Managing Director Vestas RRB India Limited. Under his able leadership, all the three organizations achieved pioneering results.RRB Consultants & Engineers Pvt. Ltd. Was the forerunner in establishing wind power as a major source of power generation in India. In collaboration with respective State Electricity Boards and Vestas, Denmark, RRB Consultants & Engineers Pvt. Ltd. has successfully rendered professional and consultancy services for establishing wind electric generators in various states in India, including one of Asia's largest wind power plant of 10 MW capacity established in record time at Lamba, Gujarat. RRB Consultants & Engineers Pvt. Ltd. is also an Independent Power Producer (IPP) having established wind farms of aggregate MW capacity. Solchrome Systems India Ltd enjoys the honor of being the first Continuous Plating Solar Selective Coating Plant. This hi-tech project is established at Parwanoo, Himachal Pradesh. Based on state-of-the-art Canadian technology, and commissioned in record time, it is aimed at import substitution and technology upgradation in the field of solar thermal energy. Solchrome Systems India Ltd. has produced and marketed approximately 600,000 sqm of solchrome solar selective coatings. Besides catering to the local market, the company is exporting its products to Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Greece, Malaysia, Mauritius, Botswana, Korea, Australia, Cyprus, U.K. and Turkey. Vestas RRB India Ltd. an Indo-Danish joint venture produces wind electric generators at Chennai, Tamil Nadu, in technical and financial collaboration with Vestas Wind Systems A/S, Denmark. Vestas RRB India Ltd. is also an IPP with established wind farms of aggregate MW capacity. Worldwide, nearly 12,200 Vestas Type wind electric generators aggregating approximately 5,500 MW are operating successfully in 40 countries. India's First Major Private Sector Commercial Independent Power Project of its kind, based on Wind Energy aggregating 15 MW and established by Vestas RRB India Ltd. for Mohan Breweries and Distilleries Ltd. was "Dedicated" by the Hon'ble Former Prime Minister of India, Shri. Atal Bihari Vajpayee on July 5, 2000 at Kayathar, Dist. Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, India. The Project is unique and one of its kind as it is the First Project in the Wind Energy Sector in India to have been financed under the Danish International Development Assistance (DANIDA) mixed credit facility. The DANIDA mixed credit facility for this project has been directly extended to the Private Sector. Also the First Indian Type Approval Certificate was issued for the first time in Asia and Developing Countries by the Centre for Wind Energy Technology (C-WET), an Autonomous Institution of the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources, Government of India, for the Vestas Type V39-500 KW Wind Electric Generator with 47Mtr. Bakshi has contributed to the successful establishment of approximately 826 wind electric generators of 55 KW, 90 KW, 100 KW, 200 KW, 225 KW and 500 KW capacity (aggregating approximately 189 MW) at various locations in the States of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka. Bakshi has presented more than 70 papers on various aspects dealing with Renewable Energy applications, technologies and related topics. In recognition of his immense contribution in the crucial area of alternate sources of energy, Bakshi has been often conferred with various recognitions and titles. In July 1995, he won the "Wind Energy Pioneer" award by the British Wind Energy Association. In 1996, he won the Order of Merit "Samajshri" for Management, which was conferred by the Indian Council of Management Executives (ICME). On 18th February 1997 at New Delhi, he was awarded "The Diploma of the National Association for Danish Enterprise and His Royal Highness Prince Henrik's Medal of Honour" for outstanding services rendered to trade relations between Denmark and India. On September 18, 2001 he was authorised by The Institution of Engineers (India) by virtue of Professional training, experience and Corporate Membership of the Institution to use the style and title of Chartered Engineer (India). In 1991, the Former President of India, Shri. R. Venkataraman conferred Bakshi with one of India's high civilian awards, the "Padma Shri" Award, for immense contribution in the crucial area of alternate sources of energy in India. In 1997 the Udyog Rattan Award was conferred to him by the Institute of Economic Studies (IES) for contribution to the Industrial development of the country. The award was bestowed by the Institute of Economic Studies on the occasion of the Seminar on "Economic Reforms" held at New Delhi on February 24, 1997. For outstanding contribution to accelerated diffusion of climate - friendly technologies, Bakshi won the Climate Technology Leadership Award. This award was bestowed him by the Climate Technology Initiative (CTI) on November 1, 1999, at the occasion of the 5th Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The award recognizes success in stimulating the adoption of climate-friendly technologies and practices in developing countries and in countries in transition to free-market economies. The 1999 CTI World Climate Technology Award is the first such award to recognize efforts of global champions to the environmental cause. For outstanding work in renewable energy industry promotion in India. The award, The 2000-Millennium Award, was bestowed by the World Renewable Energy Network (WREN) on the occasion of the World Renewable Energy Congress-VI. The Best Industrialist of 2000 Millennium Award was conferred by the Rural Education and Development Society, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India, on September 28, 2000. He won the Gold Medal 1999-2000 for Management, which was conferred by the Indian Council of Management Executives (ICME), Mumbai, on February 24, 2001.in 2002, he was bestowed with The Chairman Award, for the promotion of renewable energy. The award was bestowed by the World Renewable Energy Network (WREN) on the occasion of the World Renewable Energy Congress VII held from June 29 to July 5, 2002, at Cologne, Germany. Under the dynamic leadership of Mr. Rakesh Bakshi in his capacity as Managing Director, Solchrome Systems India Ltd. the "SESI Business Leadership Award 2002 Solar Thermal" was awarded to Solchrome Systems India Ltd., by Solar Energy Society of India (SESI), the Indian Section of the International Solar Energy Society, on the occasion of the Inaugural Ceremony of the SESI Annual Convention and International Conference held at the PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu on January 17, 2003. This year, on January 20, 2005, he won the well deserved "SESI-2004: Award for Lifetime Achievement in Renewable Energy" which was awarded by the Solar Energy Society of India, the Indian Section of the International Solar Energy Society in recognition of his path breaking achievements made and for his commitment to renewable energy. Still climbing higher on the ladder of success, Bakshi now aims to add 210-240 MW generation capacity this year to double the turnover from Rs.5.8 billion to Rs.10 billion. "With 1,111 MW capacity addition last year, India not only recorded the highest addition of power generation from wind in one year but also helped reach the fourth position globally overtaking Denmark," says Bakshi, "By choice we have decided to grow in a structured manner with more focus on after sales services like maintenance. This year we hope to reach a turnover of Rs.10 billion, nearly double of Rs.5.8 billion turnover in 2004-05," he said. Vestas this year plans to install about 40 MW wind energy capacity in Rajasthan, about 30-40 MW in Maharashtra, 40-50 MW in Karnataka and about 70 MW in Tamil Nadu. It is likely to start work in Gujarat next year. Bakshi, who is also tapping the solar energy potential, sees a Rs.250 Billion-business opportunity in renewable energy. VESTAS RRB India Ltd also hopes to inaugurate its facility to manufacture blades for wind turbines before the end of this financial year. It will invest about Rs 30 crore in this facility, which will come up near Chennai. Bakshi believes that unveiling a national level renewable energy policy would not only help India achieve its full potential from the renewable energy sector, especially windmills, it would also attract more private investment in the sector.
