A man of vision, R M Premkumar believes just in action. He jumps into action whenever some natural disaster throws life out of gear and every hungry soul cries for a cup of rice. Food Corporation of India (FCI), which he has been heading, has been providing food into every nook and corner of the country. He dreams of a hunger-free India, where every citizen gets a square meal. He is determined to eradicate poverty by supplying food at the right time and at right places and whenever required. He is the Chairman & Managing Director, Food Corporation of India Limited.

He has dream, a dream of hunger-free India, where every Indian will have a square meal. Slowly but steadily he has been moving in that direction. He firmly believes that the day is not far when no Indian will die of starvation; no Indian farmer will have to commit suicide for the want of food. To be precise, a healthy and prosperous India is what he dreams of. A 1968 batch IAS officer, Premkumar took over as the chairman of the FCI in 2003. Earlier, he was secretary in the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. So his stint in the SC & ST Commission has so far come in good stead in solving the food problems of the tribal and backward sections of the society.

He is aware that the tribal belt in the country has been beset with the problems of food shortage. He believes he could solve the problem of these tens of thousands of tribal people through well executed actions of the FCI. Premkumar has played a vital role in transforming the crisis management-oriented food economy into a stable food security system. Having handled various situations of plenty and scarcity, his visionary approach has been instrumental in rightly meeting the challenge of managing the complex task of providing food security for the nation.

He has ensured a strong food security system that has helped to sustain the high growth rate and maintain regular supply of wheat and rice right through the year. He has been playing a key role in tackling the extreme situations of drought in various parts of the country. The FCI can take pride of having contributed a great deal in transforming India from a chronically food deficit country into one that is self-sufficient in food grains. He has ensured maintenance of a satisfactory level of operational and buffer stocks of food grains to meet any adversary. And he has performed this Herculean task by dint of focused approach, characterized by the precision of a surgeon.
