A small deed is better than a big thought, is a popular saying. But what if deed and thought both are big. The answer is a spectacular achievement, which K B Chandrashekhar, Chairman, e4e exemplifies. From acquiring an engineering degree to starting a technology company in the United States, Chandrasekhar has come a long way. But then the Chairman of e4e, Inc. has always been an achiever. Born and brought up in Chennai, Chandrashekhar acquired his bachelor's degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Anna University and then went ahead to start his career with Wipro in 1983. In the seven years he served in the company, he shouldered a variety of responsibilities from sales to marketing to support functions. In 1990, Chandrashekhar moved to the United States, which gave a tremendous boost to his career.

Working as a country manager for Rolta India, Ltd., he was responsible for business development, marketing, and software consulting services. It was in 1992 when entrepreneurial bug bit him and he founded Fouress, Inc., a network software design and development firm, which served prestigious clients including Sun Microsystems, Adaptec, Toshiba, and Lockheed. Within two years, Fouress turned out to be a highly profitable venture with sales overshooting $1 million per year. A man known for his sharp intellect and business acumen, Chandrashekhar was quick to realize the potential of Internet and immediately formed a company with the name Exodus Communications in 1994.

 

The company went public in March 1998 and in 1999 Chandra was honoured with the Ernst & Young Northern California Entrepreneur of the Year. Known for his knowledge of software industries, Chandrashekhar, has also been serving on the Board of Directors of Aztec Software and Technology Service, a public traded company in the Bombay Stock Exchange, of which he was later made the chairman. In 1999, Chandrashekhar started a new company, Jamcracker with just three employees and within a short span of 10 months, the company grew to more than 150 employees and made business of nearly $42 million from top venture investors.

Jamcracker developed a model called Jamcracker Central from which IT services like desk services, on-site administration, e-mail, human resources and expense management could be accessed and managed from a single, secure portal on the Internet. It was in 2000, that Chandrashekhar along with Somshankar Das and Dr Sridhar Mitta started a new company with the name e4e. The new features of e4e included facilities like next generation outsourcing service called Services-on-Tap. It allowed deployment, management and operation of one-or-many business processes across the enterprise with the highest service quality level at the lowest possible cost.

Despite a hectic schedule that his entrepreneurial ventures demand, Chandrashekhar has not forgotten to give back to the world what he has received from it. In fact, he was instrumental in setting up the Anna University-K B Chandrasekhar Research Centre in 1999 at the Madras Institute of Technology (MIT). Chandrasekhar who loves playing tennis and traveling lives in the Bay Area of the US along with his wife and three children. And if you ask him - his source of strength, he would be quick to say-it's the family with whom he prefers to relax and unwind.
