He knows results are often obtained by impetuosity and daring which could never have been obtained by ordinary methods. In fact, he has shown a rare sense of audacity to carve out his vast empire in the realm of corporate world. Dilip Gopikisan Piramal is the Chairman of the corporate world ruling the luggage empire worth Rs.800 crore. Piramal's VIP Industries Group is the second largest luggage maker in the world and the largest in India. The VIP Industries Group was not having very good time over the last couple of years. It was going through a rough patch. But he was quick to absorb all changes.
He wants to change VIP's product profile by modernising the brand, to improve the retailing ambience and to communicate the same to the consumer through effective advertising. For Piramal, the toughest challenge is to grow the organised sector by converting the unorganised users into using branded products. Piramal is also planning to make its foray into the South-East (SE) Asian markets as well as setting up office in China. He has a vision to become an international player, by strengthening its presence in Europe and looking at bigger markets like the US. At present about 5% of its turnover comes from global markets. Piramal heads the Rs.800 crore DGP Enterprises, a group of closely held companies all of which are market leaders in their respective businesses.
Born in 1949, Piramal graduated from Bombay University in 1970 and began his career in Morarjee Gokuldas Spg & Wvg Ltd. Piramal came into his own with the takeover of Blow Plast in 1973. An ailing company till then, he turned it around in three years. VIP Luggage, which had modest beginnings, today commands 65% market share in the organised sector. A part of the then $200 million DG Piramal Group, VIP, established in 1971, heralded the birth of modern luggage in India and soon became a household name for luggage.
It is today not only the largest luggage manufacturer in the country but also the largest in Asia and the second largest in the World. The company has grown in the wide range of product offerings (hard and soft luggage) and also in geographical breadth. He has already made his international foray by purchasing Britain Carlton Company, the world's fourth largest molded luggage maker and he would soon be seen rubbing shoulders with the bigwigs of the global luggage producers. With hard work and right strategy in hand, it's not a distant dream for Piramal to make the VIP a truly global brand. |
