Tenacity of purpose is an attribute not so often found in professionals. But Dhruv M Sawhney, CMD, Triveni Industries is one of those individuals who have made achieving their goal, through purposeful means, a way of life. It's no wonder that his Triveni Industries, under his stewardship has emerged as a leading manufacturer of sugar in the country. Sugar industry has always been a high profit yielding business, but few have reaped a profitable yield than Sawhney who recently, has been riding, with increased government backing, a bigger boom. While all the sugar producers are laughing all the way to the bank, few have made a more profitable venture than Sawhney.
In fact, Sawhney has proven himself as a smart calculator. He refutes the apprehension centered on the speculation that the widening sugar industry will need more raw material in the future than is supplied to the mills as of now. In UP, only 50% of the total sugarcane output is availed by the mills. 35% of it goes to the Gur and Khandsari units and the rest is retained by the farmers as seeds. Even before the government sops were announced and the resultant boom materialized, Sawhney rightly predicted that even with the increased producing capacity, the mills would not need more than 65% of the total output. And he has proven absolutely right. Known for his down-to-earth approach to rural economy and sugar industry in particular, Sawhney utilized the opportunity to best of his interest. In fact, the government played a big role in bringing about the aforesaid boom. Freight subsidies and purchase tax relief on the part of the government have gone a long way in opening up new vistas for the farmers and the mill owners alike.
And Sawhney is all praise for the steps taken by the government as only good can come of the programme. Sugar players elsewhere take heart from the assumption that it will not be possible for the government to perennially continue with the subsidizing policy and a policy change is just around the corner. But Sawhney does not cater to this viewpoint. Although the SAP (State Advised Price) is higher in UP, he is certain that the government can not peg the price above the affordable limit of the mills. This belief of his stemmed from the fact that the government can not dissatisfy the farmers and a balance has to be maintained. Currently, Triveni Industries under the stewardship of Sawhney boasts of the capacity to crush 25000 tonnes of sugarcane per day. Sawhney has further plans of extending the business by setting up two new mills. As of now, he is occupied with the new units. If asked about future strategies, all he has to say is the consolidation, which is a key word for him, leading to further expansion. A business craftsman of a rare breed, Triveni Industries, under Sawhney is all set to hit higher trajectory of growth and expansion. |
