The road to success is always under construction. And for B. S. Kapur, Founder & CTO, IRCON, the essence of achievement lies not so much in reaching the destination but in the very process of making it possible. This clearly speaks about Kapur's vision, attitude and his fight-back credo. A man who is credited with bringing far-reaching changes in IRCON, Kapur has strived to maintain a high standard for himself as well as for the organisations he has worked with. As recognition to his contribution to IRCON and the organisation's performance he was given, not too long back ago, two awards by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry at the Export Awards function.

So far IRCON International Limited, a public sector undertaking of the Ministry of Indian Railways has won 42 awards from the Project Export Promotion Council of India. Few people know that IRCON achieved the rare distinction of earning highest foreign exchange from project exports. It repatriated more than Rs. 222 crore during the financial year 2003-2004 and all these have been possible because IRCON had people like Kapur who could provide a solid foundation to the company. Set up in 1976 to help developing countries and private sector build and maintain their railways, IRCON International has diversified itself into other areas like construction of bridges, roads, industrial complexes, signal and telecommunications, airport runways, airport construction, mass rapid transit system and leasing of locomotives.

Known for maintaining a high standard of construction, IRCON is among the very few companies in India to have been awarded ISO-9001: 2000 certification during its very initial stage. As a result of Kapur's untiring efforts, IRCON recently garnered a contract to construct five road-over-bridges over railway tracks in Maharashtra. The project is to be completed in collaboration with the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and the Jammu and Kashmir Bank. There are more accolades attached to IRCON. For example, it is the only PSU construction company in the country to have been awarded with the Mini-Ratna status.

It is also the only company in India to have been featured amongst the top ten Mass Transit and Rail construction companies with ranking at 128th among the top 223 International construction firms. IRCON is also credited with completing 300 landmark infrastructure projects in India and 90 projects across the globe including in Angola, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Malaysia, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and United Kingdom and in host of other countries. It is said that there is always a man behind an institution's success and in IRCON's case, it's people like Kapur who have given the institution a new direction to construct its future.
