Areal leader always moves with time, incorporating the best of the technologies and management practices. Ajit Gulabchand, CMD, HCC Ltd is one of those corporate leaders who understood its importance very early in his career and made it a part of his day-to-day practices. It's no wonder that he has been able to transform the once conventional construction company into a vibrant corporate entity. A firm believer in large-scale decentralization and autonomy in decision-making, Gulabchand, a graduate with Honours in Commerce from Sydenham College Mumbai, started his career as Chief Executive with the Indian Hume Pipe Co. Ltd., one of the seven companies under the erstwhile Walchand Group. As part of his progression, Gulabchand then took over as the Managing Director of the Ravalgaon Sugar Farm Ltd. During that period the company was experiencing a lean patch, and the lion's share of credit goes to Gulabchand for putting the company back on track. When HCC began facing stiff competition from international players, he was handed over the challenge-parrying assignment. The results of his appointment have been conspicuous in the present booming prospects of the company.
A man of various talents, Gulabchand has been on the boards of several companies. He has been associated as Director with Hincon Technoconsult Ltd., Hincon Realty Ltd., LAVASA Corporation Ltd., Western Securities Ltd., Gulabchand Foundation, Hindustan Finvest Ltd., Hincon Holdings Ltd., The Indian Hume Pipe Corporation Ltd., Bajaj Electricals Ltd., RPG Life Sciences Ltd., Shalaka Investment Private Ltd., Champali Garden Private Ltd., Motorsports Association of India etc. Not only this, Gulabchand has also been involved with both educational institutions and business associations. He is the Chairman of the Board of Governors and Member of the Board of Trustees of National Institute of Construction Management and Research, Chairman of the Administrative Council of Walchand College of Engineering, Sangli, Governor of World Economic and Construction Forum (Geneva), Chairman of the CII National Committee on Construction and Projects, and Governor of Construction Industry Development Council to name a few.
Apart from these, Gulabchand is also a member of the Sydenham College Golden Jubilee Trust, founder member of World Economic Forum's Disaster resource network, member of the National Council of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), member of the CII Infrastructure Task Force and member of the Managing Committee of the Bombay Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BCCI). A man who has been juggling his various responsibilities, Gulabchand is also the founder president of Construction Federation of India (CFI), past Chairman of Project Exports Promotion Council of India (PEPC) and past President and member of the Governing Council of Builders Association of India (BAI). An avid follower and supporter of sports, Gulabchand's hands are perennially full with his philanthropic agenda, which, by his own admission, is something very close to his heart. On the business front too, he is charting out new territories all the time. Sure, this man who knows to carry his responsibilities so well is all set to reach the sky.
